Medicare's skilled nursing facility benefit requires a qualifying inpatient hospital admission. Time spent under 'observation status' does not count toward that requirement, even if your parent physically stayed overnight in a hospital bed for multiple nights.

This is one of the more consequential and least understood distinctions in the entire discharge process, and it catches Fort Worth families off guard regularly. A patient can be in a hospital bed for two or three nights under observation status rather than formal inpatient admission, and if that's the case, Medicare's skilled nursing facility benefit simply doesn't apply afterward, regardless of how sick the patient clearly was. Ask the hospital directly, in writing if possible, whether your parent is classified as inpatient or under observation -- this single classification determines whether a subsequent short-term rehab stay will be covered by Medicare or will be entirely private pay.
